So far, so bored. This seems a bit lacking in vision and doesn't exactly give me a new perspective on the play or the characters. (Sorry, DT.)

Meh.

ETA: Still bored, also starting to get a bit irritated. I prefer Hamlet a bit less crazy and hyperactive.

More ETA: This is slightly frustrating, because I love DT as the Doctor, but his Hamlet really grates on my nerves. Painfully. Or is this because of that stage acting vs. TV acting thing?

For me the whole play falls flat if you can't at least to an extent sympathise with Hamlet and his struggle and journey that ultimately leads him to confront his own mortality, and so far DT has completely failed to do that... Presumably the decision how Hamlet should be played was mostly the director's, but what I still find surprising is that as the Doctor he always balanced the childlike, crazy part with a completely believable quiet gravitas, and here the crazy is just exhausting.

The madness is an act, but... I can't quite put my finger on it, he maybe enjoyed indulging it a bit too much, and I wonder if that's supposed to be in-character or if it was the actor. In any case, I thought he over-acted the madness, and it unbalanced it all a bit.

For me Hamlet should ultimately be about more than revenge and the getting there (or not); the whole play is one long confrontation with death. (I was on holiday in Denmark a few years ago and also visited Helsingor, and learned that interestingly enough the original story of Hamlet was one of a successful revenge with a sort of happily-ever-after ending; I find it intriguing how and in what direction the story was changed...)

Have you ever seen Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet film? I haven't watched it in a while and am not sure how well it would withstand the passage of time, but I quite loved it at the time...
